AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence of HIV-1 and 2 among pregnant
women in a rural area of Northern Togo. METHODS: During July/August 1992
and 1993 all women attending antenatal services in the rural area around
Dapaong, the largest town in the North of Togo, were tested for HIV-1
and 2 infection by 2nd generation Elisa, confirmed by western blot.
Further tests were done for HBsAG by ELISA and Syphilis by TPHA.
Socio-economic information was collected according to an standardized
questionnaire after informed consent was given. RESULTS: In 1992, 9
women out of 512 (1.8%) were found to be seropositive for HIV-1, of whom
2 (0.4%) showed dual seroreactivity for HIV-1 and 2. 27 (5.8%) women
were TPHA positive and 82 (16%) women were positive for HBsAG. Mean age
for all women was 24.9 years (range 15-45). Seropositive women tended to
be younger than seronegative women (23.0 vs 25.0). Mean parity was 3.4.
There was no statistical significant association between positive HIV
and Syphilis serology, place of residence and history of travel or blood
transfusion. In 1993 15 women out of 497 (3.0%) were found to be
seropositive for HIV-1. No case of HIV-2 was detected. 34 (3.0%) women
were TPHA positive and 75 (15.1%) HBsAG positive. Mean age was 24.5
years. There was no difference in mean age between seropositive and
seronegative women. Again, there was no statistical significant
association between HIV and Syphilis serology, place of residence and
history of travel or blood transfusion. CONCLUSION: In rural areas in
Northern Togo the seroprevalence of HIV-1 among pregnant women is still
increasing. The prevalence rate of HIV-2 among this group is low.
